Cleaning examination cameras
GEIS camera, exam glasses, digital otoscope and intraoral dental camera
What this is: cleaning steps for Visionflex examination cameras.
Who it's for: clinical staff who use the cameras during consultations.
Cameras that go in the mouth or ear need a fresh single-use barrier for every patient, then a wipe of the device afterwards. The barrier does most of the infection control work. The wipe catches what the barrier misses. The manufacturer's instructions for use (IFU) are the final word on cleaning each device. Where this article and the IFU differ, follow the IFU. Your organisation's infection prevention policy applies on top of both.

CU2 Dental Intraoral Camera HD C-U2
Semi-critical. It goes in the mouth and touches mucous membranes and saliva, so a disposable sheath is mandatory for every patient.
| Part | How to clean | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Disposable sheath | Fit a new sheath before each patient. Wear gloves to remove it so the outside of the sheath doesn't touch the camera. Dispose of it as clinical waste. | Each patient |
| Handpiece and tip | After removing the sheath, wipe with the hospital-grade disinfectant wipe in the C-U2 IFU. Keep liquid off the lens window and out of joints. | After each patient |
| Lens window | Lens tissue or dry lint-free cloth | After each patient |
| Cable and USB connector | Dry or lightly damp cloth | Weekly |
| Holder | Clinell or 70% IPA wipe | Daily |
If a sheath tears during use, take the camera out of use until it's been cleaned and disinfected as the IFU sets out. Never immerse or autoclave the handpiece.
