Use your GEIS examination camera

Connect, focus, capture and clean the GEIS General Examination Camera.

What this is: a practical guide to the GEIS General Examination Camera.

Who it’s for: nurses and health workers imaging skin, wounds and the mouth and throat.

What it is

The GEIS is a lightweight, handheld, medical grade camera for close-up images of skin, wounds and the oral cavity. It streams full HD video (1080p) with built-in white LED lighting, so images are clear and consistent.

It is for external examination only. Don’t use it for eye examinations, and never point the light into the eye.

In the box

  • GEIS camera with 1.5 m USB cable
  • Docking station (desk or wall mount)
  • Derma Hood and 10 single-use Derma Hood Caps
  • Tongue depressor adapter
  • 20 cm reference stick
  • User manual and carry case

Connect it

  1. Connect the round 10-pin connector to the back of the camera. The key-way goes at the top.
  2. Plug the USB end into the station’s USB hub.
  3. In ProEX, open Exam Mode, then Camera, and select VF GEIS VirtualCam. In other software, select VF GEIS HD.

Route the cable so it isn’t a trip hazard.

Controls

Button What it does
Capture (1) Press and release to capture the image in view. You can capture about every 2 seconds. Hold for about 5 seconds to turn vibration off.
Focus (2) and (3) Manual focus, one step at a time. Press and hold for a beep and vibration to jump to the nearest or furthest focus point.
Brightness (4) and (5) Four light levels: High, Medium, Low and Off. Hold both together for about 2 seconds to return to auto focus.

Accessories

  • Derma Hood. Clip it onto the front of the camera. Hold the hood flat on the skin to block room light. This gives repeatable colour and brightness, so wound and skin changes are easy to compare.
  • Derma Hood Caps. Single use. Fit a new cap before each skin contact. The mm scale helps the clinician judge size.
  • Tongue depressor adapter. Slide a standard wooden tongue depressor into the slot under the grey adapter, then clip the adapter onto the camera. Check it is fitted correctly, as a loose adapter is a choking hazard. Throw the wooden depressor away after each patient.
  • Reference stick. The 20 cm stick has a 40 mm scale. Hold it next to the area so the clinician can judge size.

Docking station

  • Use the camera for short periods, less than 15 minutes at a time.
  • Put it back in the docking station between uses. This switches off the light and video and puts the camera in standby, so it stays cool and ready.
  • To lift it out, move it forward and upward.

Cleaning

Clean the camera and accessories after each patient.

Item How to clean
Camera body Wipe with Clinell Universal Wipes or a cloth lightly moistened with 70% isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Keep liquid away from the lens and connector.
Derma Hood Wipe with Clinell Universal Wipes or a 70% isopropyl alcohol cloth after each use.

Docking station Dry or lightly damp cloth. Keep moisture off the contacts.

Troubleshooting

  • No picture. Check the 10-pin connector is seated and the USB is plugged in. Unplug and reconnect, then reopen Camera Mode and select the GEIS again.
  • The image is out of focus. Hold both brightness buttons for about 2 seconds to return to auto focus.
  • The camera feels warm. Put it in the docking station to cool. Keep sessions under 15 minutes.
  • It was dropped or damaged. Stop using it and contact Visionflex support for inspection.
