Use the handheld ECG
Take a 30-second ECG trace and share it with the clinician.
What this is: how to record a trace with the handheld ECG supplied with your station.
Who it’s for: nurses and health workers recording an ECG for a remote clinician.
For a full 12-lead ECG, see Use the 12-lead ECG.
Record a trace
- In ProEX Exam Mode, click the ECG tile to connect.
- Hold the small round power button on top of the ECG for 3 seconds.
- Ask the patient to hold the ECG between their palms or fingers so the metal contacts are fully covered. If they are unsteady, you can cup their hands to steady them without touching the contacts.
- Press the play button on the front.
- The ECG calibrates for 10 seconds, then records a 30-second trace. Time Remaining shows on screen.
- When it finishes, click Capture Reading. The trace goes to the Gallery.
- Click Save Session to save it to the patient.
For a clean trace
- Have the patient sit still and relaxed, with their arms supported.
- Keep them warm. Shivering adds noise.
- Ask them not to talk during the 30 seconds.
- If the trace is noisy, check the contacts are fully covered and record again.
Cleaning
Wipe the metal contacts and the case after each patient with an approved wipe in line with your infection control policy. Let it dry before the next use.
Troubleshooting
- The ECG won’t connect. Check it is switched on, then click the ECG tile again.
- No trace appears. Check the contacts are covered and press play again.
