Use the patient facing monitor and camera

Let the patient see the clinician face to face, and let the clinician see the patient.

What this is: how to use the second screen and the patient camera on your virtual care station.

Who it’s for: nurses and health workers running consults on a station with a patient facing monitor.

The patient facing monitor

The patient facing monitor sits on a swing arm. It lets the patient see the clinician at a comfortable size while you work on the main screen.

  1. Pull down the latch chain at the swing arm hinge to release the arm.
  2. Swing the monitor out towards the patient.
  3. Press the power button at the bottom right of the monitor.
  4. In Vision, hover over the clinician’s video and click Second Monitor. Their video moves to the patient facing monitor.

You can send any video window to the second monitor the same way.

Add the patient camera

  1. In the call, click + Add, then Add camera.
  2. Select the patient camera. It usually shows as UVC Camera.
  3. Click Continue to meeting.

The patient camera sits on a pole. Loosen the tensioners, raise or angle it to face the patient, then tighten it so it holds.

PTZ camera controls

If your station has a pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera, you can move and zoom it from the call.

  • Enable camera controls on the camera window to move it.
  • Use the arrows, or click anywhere in the picture, to move the camera.
  • Use the slider to zoom in and out.
  • Click and drag diagonally across part of the picture to zoom straight to that area.
  • Press Home to return to the home position.
  • Save and recall positions with the memory presets, for example “bed”, “chair” and “wound table”.
  • Take a screenshot to the Gallery.

Hosts can unlock the PTZ controls so the remote clinician can drive the camera themselves. Most clinicians like this. Lock it again before the next patient.

Fixed HD patient cameras

Some stations have a fixed HD patient camera instead of a PTZ. Add it the same way. It doesn’t pan or zoom from the call, so angle it by hand on the pole before the consult starts.

Good practice

  • Point the camera away from other residents, patients and visitors.
  • Light the patient from the front, not from a window behind them.
  • Check the clinician can see what they need before they start, for example the whole leg for a mobility review.
